Link Round-Up: IronFist

Binged Ironfist this weekend not expecting much after all the critical reviews.  The plot wasn't as intense as Daredevil, a lot of plot points were unintentionally hilarious, and the fight scenes were a bit lackluster.  However, the series beat the hell out of the majority of small screen comic series.  I was pleasantly surprised.

In 2011, New York artist Warren King created an incredible full suit of knight armor for a 6-year-old using cardboard, paint, hot glue, rubber bands, and velcro. Warren shared his entire DIY process on Flickr.

The top comment on Reddit suggests "Ikea should print the parts of this on the boxes children's furniture comes in." I whole-heartedly agree. Print a useful pattern on the interior of all those furniture boxes so that customers get some use from the cardboard before it goes into the garbage.

I'm a bit too old to have been a hardcore fan of Avatar: The Last Air Bender, but the series clearly stood head and shoulders above other cartoon series.  It matched the narrative depth of Naruto, one of my other guilty pleasures, and artistically, it reminded me of many of my favorite series of the eighties.  This series of prints are a beautiful tribute to the series.

"The body horror genre is not just for those of us whose sensibility is tickled by the grotesque. Far more than being merely stomach-turning, it runs fantastically and viciously rampant with the anxieties we all have about our own physical vulnerability." In The Future of Body Horror: Can Our Art Keep Up with Our Suffering?, Davey Davis revisits The Thing and contemplates the genre's role in reflecting sociopolitical dynamics and fears of individual & collective safety, vulnerability, violence, and embodiment.

Interior Design: Haunted Mansion Basement

Haunted Mansion Basement by Josh Brown

Okay, the Haunted Mansion was always my favorite Disney World ride, but I'm clearly not its number one fan.  Super Fan Josh Brown recently posted photos of he and his wife in full cosplay posing in their incredibly elaborate Haunted Mansion-themed basement.  This was clearly a work of love bordering on obsession.  In an interview with Inside the Magic, he explains his basement like this:
“When I was 11 years old, on our second trip to WDW, my grandparents sent me off on a sort of day camp called Wonders of Disney. It was sort of a class that focused on animation, but during that day the tools is too the Magic Kingdom, and particularly the Haunted Mansion. Before we went in, they were telling us fun facts or whatever about the ride, and the guide explained how Pepper’s Ghost works. That flipped a switch in my 11 year old brain that was like, ‘Oh my god, I could do this.’ (Naive to say the least). I got a little obsessed.”

Wow.  This is awesome, but Jesus, this guy has waaay too much time on him hands.
"This is a wall in my bedroom. When I bought my house I had to repaint everything since the previous owners where clearly not painters. Anyway after painting the room white I knew I needed an accent wall but couldn't decide on the color. So I made the joke about painting it every color.

570 different colors. All hand mixed using a syringe so I can recreate them if i ever need to. The only store bought colors were Black, White, Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta."

3D Print: 3D Printed Planets

3D Printed Planets and Moons by George Ioannidis of Little Planet Factory
Prints available for purchase from Etsy.

George Ioannidis of Little Planet Factory has created a wonderful line of high resolution miniature planets, moons and solar systems (1:1.5 billion, 1:1 billion, or 1:0.7 billion), each of which are made to scale using a unique 3D printing method along with a bit of hand artistry. Ioannidis’ work is available for purchase through his site and through his Etsy store.
When it is time to make a globe, the model is not cast or moulded rather downloaded to machines able to construct it out of dust sized particles from the bottom up layer by layer, placing both colour and geometry accurately. What this means is no equatorial seam, custom sizes & scaling and impossible to traditionally manufacture full colour details. After construction is complete, each globe receives a manual inspection and a hand applied layer of protective coating before being securely packaged for dispatch.

Prof. Polt's blog is also worth checking out, and his short introductions to various typewriters. Because Polt is a philosophy professor, he also has a short essay on the phenomenology of early typewriters. But typewriters are for using, and few things demonstrate that better than the page Writers and their Typewriters, which has a very long list of writers and the machines they used, with many pictures of said authors with their typewriters, including Dorothy Parker, Stephen King, Italo Calvino, Sylvia Plath, Françoise Sagan, Bob Dylan, Agatha Christie and Stanisław Lem.
