Here is a short essay on the new version of Superman from the writer Jon Morris here that I found interesting.  In it, Morris suggests something interesting and obvious as to why people want to hang on to the versions of the character they enjoyed when they were younger: that character is a symbol of that youth, and its loss a reminder of mortality.
